Hey all!

I know I’ve been rather quiet this week, and for that I apologize. We’re training new folk at work this week and next, then again at the end of July and start of August, so I don’t have much in the way of time to blog here from work. But since I’m not training tonight, I thought I’d give you some updates as to what’s been going on of late regarding everything Scormey-based.

First of all, let’s talk LOTRO! As you know, we’ve had issues the last month or so trying to play/livestream “Lord of the Rings Online”, and it has been… frustrating, shall we say? Well, I put in a ticket with SSG last week, and they got back to me the other day with a rather extensive list of things I can try to either fix the issue, or at least help them determine what is wrong. Basically, it’s a “Try this, and if that doesn’t work, generate these files and send them to us”-sort of thing, which I’ll be doing this morning.

I am very hopeful that a combination of moving to DirectX 9.0c and SSG’s suggestion will get the problem solved, and I’ll be back to livestreaming LOTRO at least one night a week, every week from now on! But at least I know that, should it not work, I have options and they are willing to help me troubleshoot the problem further. Not a lot of game companies would do that, so Hat’s Off to Standing Stone Games.

Now then, with all that said, this work I need to do on my laptop may delay this week’s “Rantcast” until Sunday morning. I still plan on doing it, but I simply might be too busy today to knock it out. But while we’re talking about that particular show, I’m thinking of moving it to my main channel (Scormey), despite it being rather… harsh… when it comes to language. It’s just kind of a pain trying to switch everything over from one channel to another, just to put out a short-form livestream like “Rantcast”. It frankly just doesn’t seem to be worth the effort.

So that leaves me with a couple of options.

  1. I move “Rantcast” to Scormey, and try to rein in the more colorful language I normally use.
  2. I leave “Rantcast” on my second channel (Scormus), as is, and just suck it up.
  3. I do something entirely different with “Rantcast”, such as change it into an even shorter-form show (10-15 minutes), and record it off-line for YouTube, or as pre-recorded content for Twitch.
  4. Just drop “Rantcast” entirely.

Okay, so that’s more than just a couple of options. Sue me!

I know #1 would be the easiest option, but also it would harm the ‘mostly family-friendly’ thing I have going on with my main channel. That’s not really acceptable to me. I’m building a good community here, and I don’t want to mess it up by chasing off people with course language and unhinged rants. But that said, #2 isn’t really acceptable, either. Bouncing between channels on Saturday morning (Pacific time) has been getting to be a real pain, trying to make sure everything works on Scormus just for a ~1 hour show, then switch everything back to Scormey’s settings, and making sure it all works to stream there less than an hour later.

That brings us to #3, which could work, but I just don’t like that idea, either. While making “Rantcast” offline would work fine, there’s editing and compiling to be done afterwards, followed by uploading, and all that takes time… Time I could be spending with my family, otherwise relaxing, or livestreaming. And let’s not forget that YouTube doesn’t deserve my content, especially not content that would take a lot more time to finish than livestream replays do. While using them as content for Twitch would be fine, that brings us back around to #1 and #2, as there would be no reason not to just livestream the show at that point.

So anyway, that leads to point #4, being dropping “Rantcast” entirely. I like the show, but I’m just not sure it is worth the effort, and – let’s be honest here – I can still rant some while doing my regular livestreams. As long as I keep my foul tongue in check, I can achieve the same goal as I had with RC on my normal streams, and avoid all this extra nonsense.

In the end, I may or may not cancel the show, we’ll just have to see how things go. Regardless, I will still make use of my second channel in some capacity, I just don’t know exactly what that might be right now.

Anyway, so that’s been my week. I’ll be working on my laptop this morning (as I said earlier), so the usual Saturday morning/afternoon shows may end up delayed, but I’ll be on eventually. And if something spectacularly bad happens, such as I have to wipe-&-reinstall the laptop yet again (just an example!), I’ll toss an update here on the site to let y’all know about it.

See you in-game!
