So I’ve been playing a variety of different indie video games the last few years, and I’m frankly shocked by the value for our dollars that we’re seeing from them. Games for “Brotato” to “Vampire Survivors” keep adding in free or low-cost content to their games, keeping them infinitely replayable and just plain a whole lot of fun! You even see bigger games like “No Man’s Sky” doing much the same thing, albeit not quite as quickly, but with much the same result.
In the end, more and more video games (especially of the indie set) are giving us more and more content for free or a very small cost, and I’m loving it.
“Vampire Survivors” is probably the best example of this, to be fair. The game itself is already inexpensive, so I have bought it at least three times on different consoles and whatnot. But then they give you a seemingly never-ending amount of free (or relatively cheap) DLC, so much so that I can’t imagine I’ll ever truly complete the game. New characters, new maps, new game mechanics, on and on it goes.
These games keep things fresh, give their players something new to do all of the time, but aren’t constantly asking for more money. Meanwhile, you have huge AAA games that not only want to buy a new copy of the same game every year (cough *Madden* cough), they also want to sell you microtransactions, as well! It’s frankly ridiculous, and an insult to their player base.
Anyway, I just wanted to say how delighted I am with these mostly-indie developers who take such good care of their player bases. Please, by all means, keep it up. I’ll be over here, playing your games and probably buying them for each console I own, plus on Steam.
