So I’ve mentioned before that I’m considering doing some form of tabletop roleplaying Actual-Play podcast again. Ever since I stopped my old solo show about 18 months ago I have missed it, and once my voice healed from the damage I had wrought from doing two podcasts every weekend, I’ve wanted to come back.
But the question is, what format should I use?
I’m inclined to do an audio podcast, something people can listen to while driving or otherwise engaged, as that’s how I like to consume such shows. I know that video Actual-Play podcasts are more popular right now, due to Dimension 20 and Critical Role, but that’s way more work than I’m really willing to put into this. I mean, I can do it, but I’m really sure it won’t be worth the effort, to be honest.
Anyway, another question I have is how long to do these shows? For example, my old podcast was one hour long episodes, with each section/story spread out over a month, with weekly episodes. But would it be better to put out shorter episodes (15-30 minutes each), perhaps published once, twice, or even three times a week?
I have an idea of how I’m going to do these shows. My plan is to resume the solo format, but I’m open to doing small groups, if needed or preferred. I also have a game in mind (“Call of Cthulhu”), using the ‘Weird Horror’ cards from the “Gamemaster’s Apprentice” storytellers decks as the Oracle. At least to start, anyway.
What I want to do is focus more on the storytelling, rather than talk about the system (dice rolls, card draws, and whatnot) Just make the action, decide how it affects the story for good or I’ll, and roll with it. Game-driven Improv, after a fashion. In a group setting this won’t work as well, but solo I can just roll the dice, draw a card, etc, and just react. Keep the show focused on the drama, so to speak.
Anyway, I am interested in what people think of this. Specifically, would such a show interest you at all, would you prefer solo or a group setting, video or audio, short episodes or longer ones, how many episodes a week, and so on? Please leave your thoughts in the comments at the bottom of the page. Also please note that this podcast will be hosted at our sister-site, TabletopTribe.org.
Thank you in advance for your thoughts on this matter.
