So I’d really like to upgrade my newish laptop computer. I want to add in more DDR4 RAM (from 16gb to 32 or possibly 64gb), and add a separate M.2 SSD (1TB or larger), because what it came with is fine, but I want to future-proof this bad-boy, and give me plenty of room for gaming and content creation.
Yeah, about that…
AI companies have been buying up all of the RAM and SSD memory of late, and what they aren’t buying, scalpers have been snagging up. All of this has been keeping the prices unnaturally high, with no signs of dropping anytime soon. Sure, RAM did come down in price a little a few weeks back, but certainly not enough, with regular consumers trying to buy up whatever becomes available on the market at a semi-reasonable price.
So, what do?
Well, I tried to crack open my old laptop a few weeks back, and steal some of the RAM and the spare M.2 SSD it has (I had added them a year or so back, to extend the life of that laptop some), but alas… A stripped screw and other issues made that impossible… unless I wanted to break the back panel of that laptop off, which I don’t. It is a perfectly serviceable backup laptop, just not a gaming machine anymore.
But there is 32GB of RAM in that bugger, and a 2TB M.2 SSD I could take in there, all it would cost me is a perfectly-serviceable backup laptop!
So, of course, that isn’t an option. I keep telling myself that, and until I manage to find a reasonably-priced M.2 SSD and some DDR4 RAM, I’ll keep chanting that mantra to save that poor laptop’s life.
Anyway, I am thinking of just sticking with the 16GB of RAM I have in my current laptop for now, and maybe pick up a 1TB M.2 PCIE SSD for it, as those aren’t completely unreasonable in price. No, actually, they are, when compared to what I paid for a 2TB M.2 SSD just a year or so ago, but whatever. I just want more space for games, as well as content creation (audio files and so forth) as a primary concern, and more RAM to play those games smoother and make content creation easier, as well.
Is that too much to ask? Is it?!?
In the end, what I have is acceptable, at least for now, but eventually I will need a new SSD and likely some more RAM. Maybe if I beg properly, My Lovely Bride will spend some of our money on this for Christmas?
I can only hope at this rate. Oh, and FUCK AI and Scalpers, too.
