Oops

So recently Crimson Flyboy on YouTube released a rather informative video, which discussed a major problem with “Starfield”: The Pointer Handle Limit. Not to get too far into the weeds on this here, but the basics of the problem break down like this:

  • “Starfield” uses Pointers to connect to and track every object in a given area (spaceship, city zone, point of interest, etc).
  • The game has a built-in limit of around 2 million Pointer Handles (the PHL mentioned above)
  • The game uses by default around one million at any given time.
  • This leave mods around one million Pointer Handles to share.
  • Any time new updates and DLC are added to the game, such as with the recent “Free Lanes” update and “Terran Armada” DLC, the amount of PH the game is using potentially increases, leaving less for the modding community.

This has not been proven, but many theorize this is what has been causing so many people to crash to desktop when they load into particularly populated zones, such as Akila City, Neon, and especially New Atlantis. Since these areas have a lot of pointers already assigned to the various decorations, NPCs and whatnot that the game must track, if someone is loading in with a large amount of mods active in their game, then the limit could be breached, resulting in… a crash to desktop.

I carry a lot of mods, and I’ve suffered many a CTD with “Starfield”, so this is of particular interest to me.

Now here’s the thing. I know a lot of people might say “Just load less mods”, and frankly, they would be right. That would work, I suppose. But with more and more of the limit being soaked up by the Vanilla game and DLC, the mods are being squeezed out more and more. This isn’t a problem if you use free mods, but a lot of them are paid mods.

Bethesda took our money when we bought those mods, and they purport to support said mods by ensuring they pass quality assurance, so shouldn’t they make sure we can actually use the products we have purchased?

In my mind, there is only one answer here: Bethesda has to find a way to increase the Pointer Handle Limit. If this were something easy to do, I expect Bethesda would have already done it, so I assume this is either impossible, or will require a major update to the game to make happen. But if Bethesda wishes to continue supporting “Starfield” into the future, as they claim to be doing, then the PHL must be increased, and by a lot.

My suggestion: Double it to 4 million. Yes, this may require increasing the minimum system requirements to play the game, as I expect this may tax a system’s memory and/or graphics memory, but it is what it is. I expect they thought that there was no way the game plus DLC and mods would ever approach 2 million pointer handles at any one time, but that limit can be breached by dropping into New Atlantis with a dozen or so big mods.

This isn’t always a problem, mind you, but when it is… the game can be frankly unplayable, especially on my Xbox Series X. All it takes is adding the wrong new mod and loading a save in a populated area, and BAM!… You have to dive into the Creations page, go over your load order, and try to figure out what went wrong… all without any help from Bethesda, because they never told anyone about this problem.

The modding community had to discover it themselves, and try to work out why their perfectly-fine mods were causing apparently random crashes, when they otherwise shouldn’t be. If Bethesda had just let the modding community know about the PHL from the get-go, or worked with them to increase it, when it because clear that the limit was insufficient, maybe we wouldn’t be here right now.

But here we are. The only question now is, what will Bethesda do to fix the issue?

UPDATE (5/11/2026): I just found out that Bethesda are releasing an update this week, which is intended to fix multiple issues, including some causing crashes and game instability. Will this address the PHL issue? Only time will tell on that, but let’s hope so.
