So HBO is looking to add to their stable of video game and fantasy adaptations, including “The Last of Us”, as well as the multiple series connected to “A Song of Ice and Fire” world. Well, now they want to create an adaptation of “Baldur’s Gate III”, using the creative team from “The Last of Us”.
Sounds great, right?
Well, here’s the problem: They aren’t including the creatives from Larian Studios in this project, which seems… problematic. Why? Because while they will be including the main characters from the extremely-popular series, they also plan to add new characters… and continue the story from where it ended in the game… without any input from the writers who created the game itself.
Any fan of the game can see what is coming, which is most likely “Game of Thrones” seasons 7 and 8, or “Witcher” season 4. The story will fall apart, veer off into some other direction, and eventually become standard fantasy trash. “The Last of Us” may be an excellent television series, but it is working with established game lore for the most part. What they are planning with BGIII is entirely different.
This will fail, I am almost certain of it. Not because of “Woke”, not because of any weird Incel complaints that might come along, but because of one, simple thing: Larian Studios isn’t involved. Without the writers at Larian helping steer this series’ storyline, it is certainly doomed to fail. Not because I want it to, but because these new creatives aren’t the folks who created the original story. They just won’t be able to do the game justice, even with Hasbro and HBO/Warner Brothers money behind it.
