Better late than never, Starfield finally to release on PS5, with perhaps a new DLC?

So I’m a bit late to this news, but wanted to talk a bit about it, before the gaming news cycle moves on to something else. Specifically, there has been a leak (from a person known to reliably be correct on previous leaks) that “Starfield” will be coming to the Playstation 5 on April 7th, 2026. There is no confirmation that this will coincide with the upcoming “Starfield 2.0” content update, let alone the overdue second DLC (perhaps called “Terran Armada”, which Bethesda teased us with last October).

But “Starfield” coming to Playstation alone is huge news. While many consider the game to be an abject failure, it has consistently remained in the Top 100 games on the Xbox platform (Gamepass rentals and outright sales charts alike) for the last two years. It was the biggest game of 2023 on Xbox, beating even “Baldur’s Gate III”, and while Steam users love to show the game under-performing on that platform, those sales pale in contrast to what the game has done on Xbox.

In short, “Starfield” is doing just fine, and is about to see a Renaissance on the Playstation 5, with or without the “Starfield 2.0” or “Terran Armada” DLC.

Now, that all said, why am I so certain of “Starfield” succeeding on the PS5? Well, there are several factors coming into this. First of all, the game is way more stable than it was at launch in 2023. Just the base game alone is worth buying, as it is a fun, open universe romp that can eat many, many hours with the replayability built into it.

Next there are the mods, paid and free alike. Most people focus on the many paid mods, but those are grossly outnumbered by the free mods, and many of the paid mods have free versions that have the same functionality. Many of the paid mods may as well be unofficial DLC (see “Watchtower”, “DarkStar”, “Everbright”, etc), adding in plenty of new functionality and content that still follows the established lore of the game. But you can find many more free mods that are awesome, and allow you to modify the game to be exactly what you want, as long as you don’t care about Achievements (or knock them out first, before modding).

Also, if you are willing to drop a bit more money, there is the first DLC for the game, being “Shattered Space”. Yes, it has its detractors. “The DLC is too short!”, “It isn’t worth the money!”, “This DLC looks like it was content stripped out of the game to sell back to us as DLC!”, and so on. Personally, I will tell you that “Shattered Space” is only too short if you speed through the main story, and don’t do any of the many side quests included in the DLC. There is a lot to enjoy here, and a lot of the haters conveniently overlook all but the main quest. As for whether of not this was content stripped out of the main game to sell back as a DLC, I can’t speak to that, since I just don’t know. It looks different enough that I doubt that is the case, and the work of stripping it all out seems like it would be more bother than it is worth, but again, what do I know?

Anyway, I do indeed hope that this leak turns out to be accurate, and that the game is coming to Playstation on April 7th. I also hope that “Starfield 2.0” also launches on that date, as well as “Terran Armada” being released (be it a free content update or a true paid DLC). Hell, if the game also launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on April 7th, I’ll go out and buy a Switch 2 just to rebuy “Starfield” and all of the DLC for that platform!

No, seriously, I would. I have been wanting to play “Starfield” on the go for years now, and I have a camping trip coming in late April. It would be great to be able to play “Starfield” on a handheld console while in our cabin retreat!

Basically, what I’m saying is I really want Playstation (and Nintendo) folks to get their hands on “Starfield”. The sooner the better.
