Avowed? AWOWed!

So apparently “Avowed” sucks. That’s news to me, as I’m enjoying the hell out of it!

Okay, I did notice there was a potential issue with this fantasy game from Obsidian (if you don’t recognize this company for its back category of amazing RPGs, then I can’t help you). What was that problem?

During character creation, you get to choose whether or not they prefer to be referred to as “He”, “She” or “They”, and whether or not to display this on their character sheet. Clearly this is the greatest sin against “Teh Gamerz” that can ever be committed!

Despite the game clearly being doomed, I chose to press on with the game, even though it obviously is horrible and a complete waste of time. I made a really cool looking dude for this Woke Trash, and set off into the game itself. Well, in a word, this game is best described as “Gorgeous”.

You know, like that other Woke Trash that will never succeed, “Starfield”?

Anyway, the graphics in “Avowed” isn’t perfect, there is a bit of the Uncanny Valley going on when you look at the characters. But it is a fantasy game, so I can forgive this, look past it, and press on into this worthless game.

So I wasn’t expecting much, since the developers dared to include pronouns in character generation. But it turned out to actually be kinda fun. Seriously fun, actually. The combat is easy to learn, flows quickly, and really enjoyable. It actually reminds me of “Starfield”, only better.

Yes, I did just say something negative about “Starfield”. No, I am not sick.

While it is not “Skyrim”, I can best describe “Avowed” as being similar to that classic game. Great gameplay, great quests, interesting characters, and a story that has me constantly wondering what is coming next. The only time I found myself annoyed was when a certain thing happened just after entering the city itself, but I hate being railroaded.

It did make me more invested in the story, though, so there’s that. Still “Woke”, though, thus “Trash”.

I do find that the freestyle quests, especially side quests, are really enjoyable. “Avowed” gives the feeling of a massive game like “No Man’s Sky”, with near-unlimited exploration, even though it isn’t. The crafting is quick and interesting, and the camp system seems ripped straight out of “Baldur’s Gate 3” (although I haven’t seen any romance options quite yet, not that I’m looking to tap my Dwarven Tracker buddy).

Fucking Woke, though.

All in all, I am very glad that Microsoft tossed “Avowed” up on Game Pass, so I could try it out for free. I probably wouldn’t have played it otherwise, especially after being burned by “Baldur’s Gate 3”. But will I be buying “Avowed”? Yeah, I probably will. Even though it is still terminally Woke.
