Delving into the Library

Delving into the Library post thumbnail image

So, I have been thinking about a project. Specifically, I’ve been considering doing reviews of my collection of tabletop roleplaying games. Since I have a rather extensive collection in my little library/office (roughly 300 different games, not including supplements), this would seem to be a good source for content, no?

Originally, my thought was to do this project as a podcast, but since I’ve had to walk away from podcasting due to my voice, that option is off the table. This leaves me doing this as blog posts, which don’t seem quite as useful or fun for that matter, but still a viable outlet.

Now with that settled, I need to determine how to attack the project. Which is to say, where to start?

I could create a list of the collection in alphabetical order, and go through it that way. A to Z, simple as pie, no? Actually, no, not so simple. I keep getting games to add to the library, roughly one every month, due to my addiction to Kickstarter and other Crowdfunding outlets. Plus I usually get one or two for my birthday and Christmas, just adding to the pile. In the end, you can probably see how I have grown the collection so large since 1979, although I’ve acquired most of them in the last five years alone. Pandemic, boredom, yada yada yada.

My point being, since I keep adding titles to the list, doing reviews in alphabetical order would get… messy. I get a little, particular, when it comes to such things, and having a new title arrive after it should have already been reviewed would frankly drive me bonkers.

I guess I could do them by publishing date/year. This could still cause similar issues, but at the same time, most of the games I’m buying now are new, so the likelihood of a conflict coming up would be low. That said, this also brings up a concern I have about this project: Who wants to read my thoughts about games that are five decades old?

So I could just attack the stack blind, and do the posts randomly. Just grab a game and give it a good once-over, regardless of where it falls in the library. That solves the problem with new games entering the collection, but again would drive me nuts, as there would be no rhyme or reason to the order in which they were done. But on the other hand, it would also allow for properly themed reviews. For example, I would be able to ensure I’m reviewing a horror game on Halloween week, and so forth.

Hell, I don’t know. I just want to be able to crack open a book and post my thoughts on it, probably on a weekly basis. There needs to be some semblance of order involved, but I will likely bite the bullet and not force myself into an extremely strict order.

Now the big question is, do I do these on a monthly basis? Weekly? Whenever the Hell I feel like it? Fnord?

Why did I think this was a good idea in the first place?
